S.A.O. Studio is a Scandinavian design Studio based in Tokyo. Founded by Danish Architect and furniture designer Charlotte Søderhamn the studio centers on small scale objects and wooden furniture designs translating everyday items into simplistic and highly functional designs, striving for an aesthetic and timeless appeal. Essential to the work is focus on quality, craftmanship, and detail, aiming to enrich and enhance the surrounding physical environment.
Being rooted in Denmark and the Scandinavian design culture, the practice builds on a minimalistic and functional design approach, yet strongly influenced and inspired by cultural, traditional and aesthetic inputs from the current location in East Asia.
A key objective for S.A.O. Studio is to refine and redefine everyday objects by introducing new layers of functionality and character, seeking to strike the right balance between form and function and with great attention to detail, creating singular modern designs, crafted to last.


Studio
Founder of S.A.O. Studio, Charlotte Søderhamn is a Danish architect and furniture designer, graduated in 2006 from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She has spent the last 5+ years in East Asia with her family, first in Taipei, and currently in Tokyo. Prior to founding S.A.O. Studio Charlotte spent 10+ years working as design architect and later as lead design architect at a large renowned architectural company in Copenhagen, Henning Larsen. Her passion for design combined with her vast experience within the design field led her to start her own practice.
In her work, Charlotte seeks to balance and connect space and interior to enrich and enhance the physical environment surrounding us.
With a minimalistic design approach and a strong sense of detail, her goal is to find the core of the concept to create simplistic, aesthetic and highly functional designs regardless of scale.
